About Joel Kramer & Diana Alstad
Joel Kramer and Diana Alstad began their life partnership in 1974. Believing that the real battle on the planet today is for people's minds and for human survival, their books and talks address the current human condition, offering new perspectives on our challenges and our untapped potential. They speak and give seminars on evolution, relationships, worldviews and values, spirituality and yoga. They are coauthors of The Passionate Mind Revisited: Expanding Personal and Social Awareness (2009) concerning individual and social evolution and The Guru Papers: Masks of Authoritarian Power (1993), which unmasks hidden social, mental and spiritual authoritarianism. Kramer and Alstad have taught at Esalen, Omega, Hollyhock and other centers throughout North America, in Europe and Asia.

Joel Kramer is the author of The Passionate Mind (1974). His postgraduate work in philosophy and psychology at the University of Florida, NYU, and Columbia (1959-1963) was on the philosophy of science, ethics, comparative religion, epistemology, and consciousness. On the resident faculty at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California from 1968-1970, he led seminars on the basic concerns of living and the evolution of awareness. He was a pioneering innovator of physical and mental yoga. The principles of his original mind/body approach introduced in his seminal Yoga Journal article “Yoga as Self-Transformation” (1980) have become an integral part of modern American yoga.

Diana Alstad is an author, lecturer, and seminar leader. A Woodrow Wilson Fellow, she received a PhD from Yale in 1971 and was a professor at Duke University in the humanities. Alstad taught the first Women’s Studies courses at Yale and Duke, co-founded New Haven Women’s Liberation in 1968, and was on the board of the Veteran Feminists of America from 1998 to 2004. Her Yoga Journal article “Exploring Relationships: Interpersonal Yoga” (1979) created a foundation for the Yoga of Relationship by extending Kramer’s yogic approach to the social arena, a modality they continue to develop and teach. She has been an interpreter and lecturer in French and Italian, and also speaks Spanish.
